Lately I read this idea from Sahil Bloom, it really stuck with me…

In 1968, a mathematician found something strange: adding a shortcut road made traffic slower, not faster.

Why?

Because everyone floods the shortcut, so it jams. The fast lane becomes the slow lane.

AI is that shortcut right now. Everyone’s automating job applications, cold emails, outreach, all the same templates, all the same fake personalization.

When everyone does the easy thing, the easy thing becomes worthless. It’s an anti-signal.

So think more of the opposite. Fewer, better shots. Real effort where others copy-paste. Show up in person where everyone hides behind a screen.

Automate utility, not humanity. Use AI to think stuff through but never to fake connection or even attention.

When everyone rushes the fast lane, you win by taking the long way.

Standing there, I noticed something…

But why is building a moat so hard?

Look at Palantir. Their real defensibility isn’t clever code, it’s years spent wiring together messy, incompatible databases inside organizations nobody else could get into.

Any new startup can technically connect databases too. That’s not a moat.

The moat is the decade of trust, integrations, and hard-won access that competitors can’t shortcut.

That’s the pattern.

Early on, you have no moat, just willingness to grind at problems others quit on.

Do that long enough and it compounds into relationships, data, and switching costs that become genuinely hard to copy.

There’s a one-minute exercise to de-risking your life… And you certainly do this more often then not…

Imagine you wake up in a hospital, lose your job, or your partner leaves.

What’s the most likely reason? And what could you do today to prevent it?

Just some simple questions. What’s striking is the ratio of how important they are to how rarely you actually ask them yourself.

Every company should run its own version. Even Paul Graham built half of YC’s advice on exactly this idea.

Who’s your customer? Why aren’t they buying? What do they actually want?

Not clever questions, obvious ones, but most founders never sit down and answer them honestly.

There’s no magic system. Startups are just straight execution on simple questions asked relentlessly.

Ask the obvious ones more often. That’s the whole edge.

At the start of any entrepreneurial journey, generating consistent cashflow should probably be your goal number one.

This is may be surprising, but cash hitting your account, is in any way helpful. Why?

Because it’s ten times easier to build when you aren’t strapped.

When your companies lifestyle covered, you make calm decisions. Without it, you operate from fear and scarcity, and fear makes terrible bets.

And if you ever do want VC money, cashflow flips the power dynamic entirely.

Investors chase businesses that already work. Positive cashflow means you’re raising from strength, not desperation.

Better terms, higher valuation, and the freedom to say no. You’re negotiating as an equal, not a beggar.

Be honest with yourself. If six months in you can’t generate enough to breathe, there’s no shame in getting a job while you build.

Again, cashflow buys you the one thing every founder needs: time to think clearly.

But here’s the part people skip: nearly all of them grinded brutally first. The ease came after the leverage, not instead of it.

Here’s the trap everyone’s falling into right now…

AI shows up with a price that makes the old way look insane. A button instead of a person. Pennies instead of a salary. The math screams yes.

Then you actually use it.

The thing that demoed like magic now needs setup, supervision, and constant cleanup.

It works halfway, but breaks differently each time, and needs someone who actually knows what they’re doing to fix it. The sticker price was never the real cost.

Look around, it’s everywhere.

Vibe coding that ships you a broken half-product from a prompt. AI support that’s cheaper per ticket but quietly bleeds customers. Automation that costs less per task but more in oversight and trust.

I’m not anti-AI.

Sometimes it genuinely wins. But cheaper on paper and better in practice are two completely different things, and people keep confusing them.

So count in everything, like setup, maintenance, and what actually gets delivered.

Often the “expensive” human is the bargain against the chaos current AI can bring. (I know this can change in the future)

But cheaper isn’t value. Working is.

In general there are two types of people in work life…

Explorers and executers. To get something done, you need both.

But can you be both or is focus needed. Lets find out.

First things first.

Explorers experiment, fail fast, question assumptions, chase new.

Executors standardize, automate, leverage what works, fail never.

They work on the same company, but in a completely different operating system. So what is better or when you need what?

So before product-market fit you need pure exploration. What problem are we solving? Who actually buys? What makes them want it?

This is defently the wrong time to optimize, but the right time to question everything.

Execution here, would kill every company by scaling broken assumptions.

After fit, exploration becomes expensive chaos. Now you standardize, automate, extract value from what’s proven.

Wrong time to reinvent, but right time to compound.

So there are some people can genuinely do both, but of course not simultaneously. Their skill isn’t being both explorer and executor, it’s knowing exactly when to switch.

So stop experimenting when something works. And stop scaling when the market shifts. That timing separates good entrepreneurs from great ones.

But in the end most people can’t switch cleanly. They’re wired for one mode and that’s not a weakness. Forcing an executor to explore produces paralysis. Forcing an explorer to standardize produces ends often in chaos.

So the solution isn’t fighting your nature. It’s finding your complement. The best founding teams are one explorer, one executor, and operating in the right mode at the right moment.

This is maybe a unobvoius truth, but most blank canvas businesses fail quietly more often then you think.

Infinite possibility sounds liberating for the start, but they are a trap.

If you looking for a new business idea, you realize no borders are most of the time pushing you away finding a great solution for a real problem.

Greenfields are seductive. No legacy, no limitations, pure vision.

But it’s also where most startups evaporate, building solutions searching for problems. (the worst way you can choose to execute an idea)

There is one better move…

Find the trenches. Regulated industries, legacy software, frustrated workflows, underserved niches.

Places where constraints create friction. Because friction creates willingness to pay.

Constraints tell you exactly what matters.

Budget limits reveal true priorities. Compliance requirements expose where risk lives. Legacy systems show where pain concentrates.

If you can generate real value inside those constraints, navigating the complexity others avoid, you’ve found something defensible.

Because the constraints that slow competitors down become your moat.

Opportunity hides where it’s uncomfortable. Go there.

Create more value than you consume, such that both parties leave the transaction better off.

That’s it. That’s the whole game.

Zero-sum thinking says one winner requires one loser. Like poker.

Negotiating a used car. Fixed pie, redistributed slices. Most people mistake business for this.

Positive-sum games create new value entirely. You pay twenty dollars for a book that generates a hundred thousand in knowledge.

Like the author earns, but you even earn more.

The pie gets bigger.

Great businesses are positive-sum machines. Every transaction should leave customers richer, in time, money, capability, or peace of mind, than before they met you.

So the recipe is simple…

Obsessively understand what your customer actually values, then deliver more of it than you charge for.

Price below the value you create. Then repeat at scale.

(I know this sounds so easy, but is hard to achieve)

But then customers win visibly, they return to you, they refer you, and they trust you also with new stuff.

AI democratized capability, not success.

Everyone has the same tools now, the gap is between people who just generate and people who ship solutions to actual problems.

Building valuable stuff that solves real problems remains the only game. Even more now.

AI just accelerates execution. The winners aren’t prompt engineers; they’re builders using AI relentlessly to create things the market actually pays for.

Real economic value distills to four outcomes:

3. making more money

4. reducing risk

Every business that survives, touches at least one. If your AI project doesn’t map to these, you’re experimenting, not building.

The leverage isn’t in better outputs, it’s in faster problem-solving.

“I want to implement half their ideas even if we don’t hire them”.

This isn’t just a feeling, it’s your company recognizing natural alignment.

They’re already solving your problems without access to internal systems. Imagine what they’d do with actual context.

This flips the a hiring script. Stop asking hypotheticals about workplace conflicts.

Start asking: “What would you change about our product?”

Remember when you first joined any social media app and found five of your friends in the first few minutes?

That wasn’t an accident. That was your aha moment. The exact point where you went from “trying this out” to “I need this.”

Everything before that moment is friction. Everything after is retention.

Most products never get users there. They bury value behind tutorials, feature tours, and empty states. Users leave before experiencing why your product matters.

The distance between signup and aha moment predicts churn better than almost anything else.

Slack knew this, their aha moment was 2,000 messages sent by a team. They optimized everything to get teams there fast.

Find your aha moment by looking at users who stick around. What did they do in the first session that churned users didn’t?

That’s the signal to follow.

Then remove everything between signup and that moment.

No tours. No “complete your profile.” Get them to value immediately.

Users don’t churn because your product is bad. They churn because they never experienced it being good.
