Everyone chases outlier skills to achieve success in their craft.
But while you're learning advanced techniques, someone else dominates with “just” simple fundamentals.
This obsession with being exceptional is missing the obvious point. Therefore you should focus on the basics first...
I think Blake is right here, great skills are important too but what gets you into the top 10% is most of the time different.
So here are some essential you should focus on:
Show up on time.
Half your competition already failed here.
Follow up fast.
Most people forget or procrastinate responses.
Keep your word.
Reliability beats talent every single time.
Say thank you.
Basic manners are surprisingly rare.
Double-check your work.
Quality control separates professionals from amateurs.
Yet most people skip fundamentals for flashy skills. Why?
Basics feel boring. We want to be special, not dependable.
Social media celebrates genius, not consistency.
The brutal truth hits differently.
While you're perfecting advanced strategies, someone else wins deals by simply returning calls promptly and delivering what they promised.
Outlier skills matter later. Fundamentals separate you from 90% of people immediately.
Be the person others can count on. Everything else builds from there.
So keep showing up, and stay curious.
Your favourite Domi.
