Hire people who make you steal their ideas
Maybe the best hiring advice for knowledge workers
Time: 3.10 Minutes
Hiring is maybe the most controversial topic of all…
And even with the best methods you will hire more often wrong then right. But maybe there is a better way to score at least not too bad.
So most interviews test credentials and culture fit. But smart companies test idea density instead.
When a candidate drops insights you immediately want to implement, you’ve found maybe THE signal cutting through the résumé noise.
So the feeling you looking for to have yourself after you interviewed a canidate is…
“I want to implement half their ideas even if we don’t hire them”.
This isn’t just a feeling, it’s your company recognizing natural alignment.
They’re already solving your problems without access to internal systems. Imagine what they’d do with actual context.
This flips the a hiring script. Stop asking hypotheticals about workplace conflicts.
Start asking: “What would you change about our product?”
The ones who’ve already thought about it, who have frameworks ready, who make you reach for your notes, those are your people.
Bad hires have good answers to your questions. Great hires have better questions than you knew to ask.
They’re not performing competence; they’re leaking expertise they can’t help but share.
So hire the idea leakers and stay curious.
