Is every company a mess in the end?
Why some businesses make money while being chaotic and others don't
Read Time: 3.40 Minutes
Lately I read this quote by Shana Puri:
I used to think “man, this company is such a sh*tshow. Other companies must have it figured out”
Then I realized, nobody has it figured out. Every company is messy.
This got me thinking, is this statement transport some overall truth in the end?
Since I entered the "work" life, you find me often complaining about companies which not have their sh*t together.
Especially the companies I saw from the inside myself, always had at least some messy zones.
But where is the difference?
A funded growth stage startup with a yearly loss of 90 millions vs. my family's business with straight profits over 60 years.
And I can't tell you how messy it gets when 1000+ people grow at a high pace.
One hand didn't know what we other does.
An example?
Finance told us to hire 8 new people next month, two months later after hiring all of them, they recognised we only had budget for 4.
At my family's business?
Except the normal email and invoicing tools, everything else wasn't operating digital. Huge manual work which lead to processes which weren't redundant. Just one in the whole company knew everything…
The boss.
And that's maybe a bad idea when this person get ill or can't work for a while.
But how messy is okay and when it shifts to too messy?
Or framed different...
Where in your business messy is okay and where not?
Thinking more in depth about this, I have to remember the question you should maybe always ask in business.
Is this really a burning problem or is it a problem which needs no solution?
Just to get this right.
Burning problem means in this case, if you not solve this in a better way, you will face problems which cost you money, efficiency or you will fall inoperable at all.
Like if you need a painkiller for headache, without you couldn't even think straight.
A problem which needs no solution is one, which is something nice to have but not important for survival.
Like a nice brand T-shirt which makes you only look better, instead of an ordinary one.
I think businesses which are messy but profitable do one thing right...
They prioritise in proper order.
Being systemic and clear on the things which counts. Counting in revenue and save operational costs.
If you running a business which is messy on a loss, you should may think about your problems and priorities again.
Again. Always ask, does this problem needs a solution or not?
