Ever caught yourself drowning in tasks you shouldn't be doing? Or worse, micromanaging your team because "nobody does it as well as you do"? (I know that feeling...)
Let me introduce you to something that changed my leadership game for ever, back then I had 25 young people under my belt…
The 5 Levels of Delegation.
Think of it as a trust ladder, where each step gives you more freedom and your team more power as followed…
Here's the beauty of it.
You start with new team members with level 1 ("Do as I say"), where you're basically remote-controlling people.
The key here is to help them to understand the context you working in and give them psychological safety.
But the magic happens as you help them climb higher…
By Level 3, you're already in "Research and recommend" territory, where your team member brings solutions to you, not just problems.
The real transformation? Level 5 - complete independence. Imagine having people that handles complex challenges without needing your constant input.
Sounds like a dream, right?
But here's the catch (there's always one): You can't jump straight to Level 5. It's like trying to run before you can walk.
You need to build trust gradually, both in your employees abilities and in your capacity to let go.
This approach not only give yourself freedom on the long run, this is also how great onboarding looks like. Keep in mind higher levels need longer to jump through.
To put this in perspective. My fastest run with a colleague was 1 1/2 years from intern to team lead.
So stay curious and delegate wisely.
