Companies need different humans at different stages, and too many mismatches quietly kill them.
At founding, you need explorers who thrive in chaos, people who make gut calls with no data because there is no data yet.
Finding PMF needs obsessive learners who talk to customers relentlessly and pivot without ego.
But scaling flips everything.
Now you need operators who build systems, standardize, and hire well. The founder who loved ambiguity often hates this stage.
Mature and corporate demands someone else.
Optimizers, people who protect margins, manage process, and make careful decisions at scale.
The best explorer becomes a liability in a mature org. The best operator suffocates a young startup.
So in your next interview, stop asking only "is this person great?"
Ask instead "is this person great for where we are right now?"
A brilliant hire in the wrong stage is still a wrong hire.
Fit isn't a nice-to-have, it's the difference between someone who accelerates you and someone who quietly drags you down.
Know the stage. Match the person.
So hire for environment and stay curious.
