Startups aren't science
Why systems beat theories every time
Time: 3.40 Minutes
So many people are treating business like a sience lab. And this is understandable.
But startups aren't replicable science, it's a unique combination of timing, market, and personality that will never exist again.
This obsession with "proven frameworks" is paralyzing European founders. Therefore you should build systems, not follow formulas...
Why can't business be science?
Every context is different. Your product, market, timing, and team create unrepeatable conditions.
The sample size is one. You can't run controlled experiments when you ARE the experiment.
Variables keep changing. Market shifts, competitors pivot, customers evolve faster than your hypotheses.
But how do you build working systems instead?
Here are some directions to get you going:
Create feedback loops everywhere.
Weekly customer calls. Daily revenue tracking. Monthly team retrospectives an so on…
Document what actually works.
Not what should work, what moves your specific needles.
Build decision frameworks.
Simple rules for common situations. "If this, then that" logic chains.
Test small, scale fast.
Run tiny experiments constantly rather than big theoretical bets.
Yet most founders chase "best practices" from different industries. Why?
Frameworks feel safer than figuring it out yourself.
Case studies promise repeatable success. Business schools teach theory over practical system building.
The brutal reality hits hard.
While you're applying someone else's playbook, competitors create custom systems for their unique situation and dominate.
Your business needs your systems, not Harvard's. Of course you can get your ideas from there, but make sure to implement them for your case in specific.
So keep building what works, and stay curious.
