“Come on Domi, not storytelling again. Leave me alone with this, I thought this is a business newsletter…”
This or something similar could be your reaction, if I want to talk about this topic with you again. (I hated this “soft” topic as well in my earlier life)
But storytelling is crucial for business success. In terms of getting customers, getting funding or also getting promoted if working for a corp.
Even so, people and blog posts are very vague about how to tell a compelling story. Many people also think that you either have it or not.
I don’t think so.
Of course it’s helpful if you a natural great storyteller. But at least you can improve a great amount by learning the essentials of it if you don’t.
Last week, I read a masterclass by Twitter-Bro Matt Gray, which summarised the key parts of how to get a great storyteller. (linked below)
So here are the golden nuggets you should implement to raise your skills:
Start with a strong hook: You don’t need to say hello if in front of an audience, just start with something pushing. Like “I’ve been waiting for this day since 2.5 years…”.
Create a villain: Like in all good Hollywood films, you need a counterpart. This can be a competitor, industry or a currently used method. Use this to show there your thing is different.
Show don’t just tell: If possible show what you talking about with a live demo or so. If you have to rely on words only, then describe your demo with words as good as you can.
Use repetition: You should repeat your main message often and refer back to it during your talk. Build an anchor to your key message, make people never forget this message ever again.
Make it personal: Like tell your thoughts to it, or how this effects your personal life.
Simplify complex topics: The best storytellers can summarise complex ideas or situations into simple easy to follow terms without changing the meaning. This makes it easy for listeners to follow and remember.
If you want to dig deeper, here is the post…
I can’t tell you enough how important storytelling is to succeed with a company, idea or even projects. Look at big brands like Nike or Coke, how they use great stories to make us remember and get into our unconscious mind.
So stay curious and tell your story.
your favourite Domi.
