This one is wild…
While most companies beg top talent to join with fancy perks and inflated titles, Shopify took a completely different approach.
They built a filter that actively repels the wrong people. (And it's brilliant...)
Looking at Shopify's career site reveals what might be the most refreshingly honest recruiting strategy I've ever seen.
They don't start with "Join our amazing team!" Instead, they lead with "Not everyone can do this" and "You're not {everyone}."
This is the opposite of traditional recruiting. Instead of trying to appeal to everyone, they deliberately create friction.
Their message is clear: We're not for normal people. We're for the obsessed, the builders, those with "no off switch."
What fascinates me is how they've created a "secret" fast track to filter after the “right” talent.
Notice how they literally say "Screw the resume" and ask for "receipts". They demand actual proof of what you've built.
The genius here?
A-players don't want to work with B and C players. By creating a recruiting process that filters for excellence and celebrates being extraordinary, they attract exactly the caliber of talent they want.
And remember, in times of upcoming AI, it’s even more crucial to hire only the best. Think of AI as leverage. You don’t want to 10x a B or even worse a C player. You want to accelerate only the best.
So stay curious and recruit deliberately.
