Germans get a bad reputation for being blunt. People say it’s backwards.
But directness isn’t rudeness. Used right, it’s respect.
It’s saying “I value your time enough not to make you decode me.”
Paul Graham nailed it:
If you want something from someone, make it clear what. It’s not imposing to ask explicitly. It’s imposing to be vague and make the recipient do the work of figuring out what you actually mean.
That’s the whole thing. Softening, hinting, dancing around the point, that’s the true selfish move.
You’re outsourcing your discomfort onto others.
Direct people aren’t cold. They’re honest, efficient, and easy to trust.
(but of course stay constructive at all times doing this)
So say what you mean. It’s the kindest thing you can do.
So be direct and stay curious.
