It takes a decade or two to build a moat. Until then, your moat is your relentlessness and determination.
But why is building a moat so hard?
Look at Palantir. Their real defensibility isn’t clever code, it’s years spent wiring together messy, incompatible databases inside organizations nobody else could get into.
Any new startup can technically connect databases too. That’s not a moat.
The moat is the decade of trust, integrations, and hard-won access that competitors can’t shortcut.
That’s the pattern.
Early on, you have no moat, just willingness to grind at problems others quit on.
Do that long enough and it compounds into relationships, data, and switching costs that become genuinely hard to copy.
Moats aren’t built. They accumulate.
Stay relentless until they do.
So stay relentless until they do and be curious.
